What Usually Doesn't Work

You have probably lived with your fear for most of your life. You’ve done your best to cope, and probably tried one or more of the strategies listed below. And still you find the fear persists. This is not a failing on your part. This is because of the very nature of how fears like yours become established. They are outside your conscious control.

Exposure therapy – Often called the “Gold Standard” for removing phobias. The problem is that it is so brutal most people give up before it can give results.

Talk therapy or CBT  – If your fear were logical, you would have gotten rid of it long ago.  The fear is an unconscious response that is typically impervious to logic.

-phobia
: an exaggerated usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation

Xanax, SSRIs, Benzos, and more  – Medication serves to reduce the symptoms of fear, but not the fear itself. Medications can leave you feeling numbed, but do nothing to remove the fear itself. They can also produce side effects, addiction, and more anxiety.

Relaxation exercises, physical exercise, mindfulness  – Mindfulness certainly has a place in reducing fear, but it is often not quite up to dealing with a phobia. It can even feel like avoidance.

Daily routines and coping techniques – Coping techniques often feel like bandaids. They are good after dealing with the phobia, but don’t get to the root cause.

No exposure therapy, no drugs - a complete unconscious reframe

Your phobia may control everything you do. You can’t function. You stop doing the things you love. You feel you are missing out on life.

Nobody sets out to have a phobia. You’re not weak or illogical. The phobia is a very logical reaction of the unconscious mind to protect you from something it regards as dangerous.

Phobias are usually created in one instant of heightened emotion, usually when you were a child. Your unconscious mind perceived something as dangerous, and it has been determined to protect you from that thing ever since.

That is why nothing seems to work – not drugs, not relaxation, or talk therapy. Your unconscious mind says “that’s nice, but I have a job to do and I’m going to do it.”

The solution is not to fight your unconscious protective mechanism, but to help it protect you in a more productive way, without the fear and all the physical reactions.

Frequently Asked Questions

You are in control the whole time. It only works if we work together. You are always aware and can ask questions or open your eyes any time. You actually gain control of yourself, maybe for the first time in a long while.

We’re not digging things up unless you want to. It is not necessary to dig up trauma to get over a phobia. But if a trauma is bothering you, we can gently take away its power if that is what you want to do.

If you have a phobia, you have already been hypnotized for a long time. What we would be doing is un-hypnotising you. You don’t go deep into trance or anything like that. I simply ask you to imagine certain things. It is up to you to do it or not. I’m not asking you to forget your name or bark like a dog.

Contrary to hilarious movies like Office Space, it is impossible to get stuck in a trance. In the rare cases where people have stayed in a trance longer than usualy, they always say afterwards that they were feeling so good they just didn’t want it stop.

Losing a phobia is like losing an aching baby tooth. You don’t change because you lose a tooth. You are still you, just without that one annoying pain. You are much more than your phobia, I can assure you!

Once you lose an illogical fear, it is hard to get it back. You might remember what you had to imagine to have that fear, but that would be a conscious choice.
