I rode an elevator for no reason. Amazing!
If this sounds familiar, there is a reason. Many of my clients used to experience the same thing, day in and day out. It is a surprisingly common fear, one that is difficult, if not impossible, to fight using willpower alone. Claustrophobia is an unconsciously learned pattern of behavior that runs automatically. To change it, you have to to change the unconscious pattern.
You’ve probably already tried to push through this on your own – so if it hasn’t worked, it isn’t for lack of trying. Most approaches simply miss the one thing that actually drives claustrophobia: the automatic, unconscious reaction that fires before you can think.
Exposure therapy – often so uncomfortable that people give up before it has a chance to work.
Talk therapy & CBT – valuable, but fear isn’t logical, so logic alone rarely switches it off.
Medication – can ease symptoms for a while, but doesn’t resolve the underlying trigger, and brings side effects.
Relaxation & Mindfulness – genuinely helpful, but usually not enough on their own.
Daily coping techniques – constant coping can quietly signal your brain that the situation really is dangerous.
If one of these is your world right now, you’re in the right place.
Facing an MRI or CT Scan
There’s a scan on the calendar and you’re dreading the tube more than the results. You need to be ready – and soon.
Elevators & Small Spaces
Lifts, tunnels, windowless rooms – you map your whole day around avoiding them, and it’s quietly exhausting.
Nervous Flyer
You want to say yes to the trip, the wedding, the family visit, the job interview – without dreading the sealed cabin for weeks beforehand.
Everyday Triggers
Crowds, back seats, the dentist’s chair – you just want your world to feel open and yours again.
IMAGINE THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS
You step into the elevator while writing a text. You get an MRI scan, thinking only about the results. You book a trip and you know you will go and have a great time.
You don’t have to plan your life around exits and excuses. You don’t have to explain anymore. You just have the ordinary, everyday freedom that most people take for granted.
All that is possible when you make some small unconscious shifts.
They arrived with the same fear and the same doubts. Here’s what changes.
Recently I was diagnosed with a medical condition where I was going to require a series of CAT scans and MRIs. As a lifetime sufferer of claustrophobia, I was more worried about the tests than I was about the illness and the illness is life threatening. Elevators, planes, CAT scans and MRIs are the bane of my existence. Even one-person public rest rooms were extremely difficult for me. I honestly thought of not getting the tests because my fear was so extreme…
So did it work? Well after the third session I had a Dr appointment on the 1st floor. But I was so eager to test my new “tools” I actually got on the elevator to the 2nd floor for no reason! That was something I never thought I’d do. EVER! I rode an elevator for no reason. Amazing. Read Full review
“My experience with Shawn was really positive and the session with him truly helped me a lot to face a fear of claustrophobic environment for MRI. Shawn puts you really at ease during the session and provides you with the right tools for facing certain difficult situations. As a result, I had a super smooth MRI experience, quite different from previous ones.”
You are in control the whole time. It only works if we work together. You are always aware and can ask questions or open your eyes any time. You actually gain control of yourself, maybe for the first time in a long while.
We’re not digging things up unless you want to. It is not necessary to dig up trauma to get over a phobia. But if a trauma is bothering you, we can gently take away its power if that is what you want to do.
If you have a phobia, you have already been hypnotized for a long time. What we would be doing is un-hypnotising you. You don’t go deep into trance or anything like that. I simply ask you to imagine certain things. It is up to you to do it or not. I’m not asking you to forget your name or bark like a dog.
Contrary to hilarious movies like Office Space, it is impossible to get stuck in a trance. In the rare cases where people have stayed in a trance longer than usualy, they always say afterwards that they were feeling so good they just didn’t want it stop.
Losing a phobia is like losing an aching baby tooth. You don’t change because you lose a tooth. You are still you, just without that one annoying pain. You are much more than your phobia, I can assure you!
Once you lose an illogical fear, it is hard to get it back. You might remember what you had to imagine to have that fear, but that would be a conscious choice.
If you’ve spent years quietly working around this fear, I want you to know:
I understand. My job isn’t to be the hero of your story – it’s to be the guide who helps you become the person who steps into tight spaces without a second thought.
For five years I’ve helped people quiet the fear claustrophobia creates – getting the MRI they’d been putting off, taking the lift without thinking, finally booking the flight. I also know how isolating it feels, and how maddening it is when “just relax” is the best advice anyone offers. So my approach is different: private, respectful, and completely led by you. I guide the process – you stay in control the whole way.
